Raising I-T exemption limit will benefit the ‘great Indian Middle class’: Jaitley

NEW DELHI: Union minister

Arun Jaitley

on Friday said the government’s decision to exempt income of up to Rs 5 lakh from tax will benefit the “great Indian Middle Class”.

The significant announcement made by finance minister Piyush Goyal in his Interim Budget 2019-20 speech will strengthen the purchasing power of the middle class which holds the key for India’s future, Jaitley wrote in a Facebook post.

Goyal, who was recently given the charge of the finance ministry temporarily, presented the Budget for 2019-20 in the absence of Jaitley, who is away in New York for medical treatment.

“Piyush Goyal has today made a significant announcement wherein income earners earning upto Rs 5 lakh have been exempted from payment of Income-tax.

“This effectively strengthens the great Indian Middle Class whose expansion of purchasing power holds the key for India’s future,” Jaitley said.

He further said the budget marks a high point in the policy directions that the government headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given to the nation.
Jaitley noted that interim budgets are presented in an election year to seek a vote on account for a limited period till the post-election government can decide the further direction of the economy.
However, he added that past precedents have conclusively shown that urgent steps are required in the larger interests of the economy and they can be taken.
“We have the immediate precedents of the year 2009 and 2014 where significant taxation changes were brought about in the Interim Budgets,” Jaitley pointed out.
In an apparent reference to the raging controversy over jobs, Jaitley wondered how the Indian economy can grow at an average of 7.5 per cent in the last five years without any job creation.
“The last five years have seen an average of about 7.5 per cent real GDP growth … Is it possible to conceive that such high nominal growth despite controlled inflation will not lead to any job creation,” he noted.
Stating that several data points, including the EPFO numbers, have given a detailed indication of the job creation, Jaitley pointed out that if there is no employment generation as alleged, there should have logically been a great social unrest in the country.
“Past five years have passed off without a single major protest movement,” he asserted.
Stating that the vision is to make India a $5 trillion economy, he said, “By the middle of the next decade we will achieve this and thereafter, target doubling that size of the economy.”
Jaitley also said there were no globally established models on the immediate impact of demonetisation on GDP growth.
“The former Prime Minister’s statement that it will lead to a 2% drop in the GDP captured the imagination of the Government’s critics. Neither the original data for 2016-17 and 2017-18 nor the first revision proved that,” he wrote.
Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had earlier said demonetisation will lead to a 2 per cent drop in GDP growth.
Jaitley also stressed that 2014-19 has been perhaps the best-performing period in terms of India’s macro-economic stability.
“The GDP growth during this five year period will be about 7.5 per cent. The inflation will be in the range of 4 per cent… It is, therefore, obvious that India is being hailed as a bright spot in the global economy,” he said.

Lakeland man stored child porn on borrowed cell phone, detectives say

 – A Lakeland man is accused of storing disturbing child porn imagery on a cell phone he borrowed, detectives said.
Polk County detectives said a couple met 41-year-old Larry Meggers through a church program six years ago. They offered him a place to live along with an older cell phone they were no longer using. When the couple asked for the phone back, they found more than 500 child pornography imagery stored on it, officials said.
Detectives were notified and said the images and video showed children as young as 6 months old and as old as 13 years old. It does not appear to involve any children living in Polk County or any whom Meggers had contact with, they said.

Meggers, who was described as a handyman, was arrested on 200 counts of child porn possession.

Families Beware: This Super Bowl Ad Tries to Turn Porn Addiction into a Joke

Millions of Americans watching the big game Sunday will encounter more than anticipated.
Devour, a Kraft/Heinz food brand, purchased a commercial spot attempting to turn porn addiction into a laughing matter.
Due to restrictions on content, the food brand will air a 30 second “censored” version during the third quarter according to MovieGuide. However, the brand released the uncensored video to stir up a buzz before its Super Bowl spot.
The 60-second uncut video includes an unmarried couple engaging in sexual innuendos around “frozen food porn”. Though the word “porn” cannot be used in the Super Bowl ad, the video still relays its intended message.
In the uncut version, the commercial starts with the girlfriend speaking to the camera stating, “My boyfriend is addicted to frozen food porn.” The edited version starts with her stating, “My boyfriend has an addiction.”
The unedited commercial continues as the boyfriend drools over the frozen meals, searches for “food porn” online, and neglects intimacy with his partner. It concludes with the girlfriend stating, “Now, we’re into amateur food videos” — a clear reference to amateur porn videos.
Kraft/Heinz went further to promote its Devour brand by purchasing an ad spot on a huge porn website that receives over 80 million viewers a day. The company also set up a hotline number entitled, 1-83-FOODPORN, for people to call and hear food porn statements similar to a sexual hotline.
This is not the first time Devour has been promoted with inappropriate content. In 2018, the controversial superhero character Deadpool was used to promote the brand.
In an interview with USA Today Sports, Katy Marshall, head of marketing, stated their target is men. The initiative is similar to many porn websites targeting men as well.
“Actually, we know from the purchase data that both men and women buy them, because delicious food is really for everyone,” stated Marshall. “But the primary target for Devour has been male, based on the specific unmet need when we were developing the brand.”

Bollywood releases boundary-breaking lesbian romance

The cast of ‘How I Felt on Seeing the Girl

ABollywood film on lesbian love released on Friday is pushing boundaries in a country where most audiences find the subject too embarrassing to mention.
Ek Ladki ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga (How I Felt on Seeing the Girl), a light and humour-laced production, centres on the relationship between a lonely small-town Punjabi heroine and her doting father, who is eager to marry her off in an “arranged” match.
On being introduced to prospective grooms, she quietly but firmly states that no boy can win her heart.
Instead, she declares her love for another woman, a claim that evokes drunken laughter from her putative husband and excuses from her family that she is unwell and in need of treatment.
As the film progresses the heroine struggles for her right to lead life on her own terms.

“It’s an unusual theme and one that a majority of Indians find difficult to accept and come to terms with” said Ms Seema Mustafa of the Mustafa of the Centre for Policy Research in New Delhi.
Same sex love isn’t a frequently broached topic by Bollywood but of late some productions have grudgingly admitted that it exists, she added.
Fire, an earlier film with a lesbian them, evoked violent reactions after it was released in 1998.
Offended by the overt gay love it portrayed, Hindu zealots from the right-wing Shiv Sena in Mumbai smashed glass panes in city cinemas, burnt posters and shouted slogans, forcing theatres to cancel its viewing.
But things had changed over the past two decades.
After years of campaigning by gay rights activists, India’s Supreme Court de-criminalised homosexuality last September, ending an archaic Colonial-era law.
Prejudices, however, persist amongst the general Indian public against members of the LGBT community – something films like Ek Ladki seek to change.
Film director Shelly Chopra Dar’s understated and gentle characters bear no resemblance to Bollywood’s typically exaggerated characterisation of homosexuals as she endeavours to portray the growing reality of gay love in Indian society

The Latest: NATO says Russia in breach of arms treaty

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo speaks at a news conference at the State Department in Washington, Friday, Feb. 1, 2019…
WASHINGTON  — The Latest on the Trump administration’s decision to pull out of a U.S.-Russia arms control treaty (all times local):
9 a.m.
NATO says Russia is in breach of a key Cold War-era nuclear treaty, and the Western military alliance is urging Moscow to come back into compliance during the six months that remain before the United States abandons the pact.
The U.S. says it will suspend its obligations to the treaty on Saturday, and that if Russia doesn’t come into compliance, the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces treaty “will terminate.”
Minutes after the U.S. announcement, NATO nations urged “Russia to use the remaining six months to return to full and verifiable compliance to preserve the INF Treaty.”
NATO members say the military alliance will continue to review the security implications of Russian missile development. They say NATO will take any “steps necessary to ensure the credibility and effectiveness of the Alliance’s overall deterrence and defense posture.”
NATO says that if Moscow fails to destroy all new missile systems that Washington insists violate the treaty, “Russia will bear sole responsibility for the end of the treaty.”
8:30 a.m.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has announced that the U.S. is pulling out of a treaty with Russia that’s been a centerpiece of arms control since the Cold War.
The American withdrawal had been expected for months. It follows years of unresolved dispute over Russian compliance with the 1987 pact, which bans certain ground-launched cruise missiles. Russia denies violating the treaty.

U.S. officials also have expressed concern that China, which isn’t part of the treaty, is deploying large numbers of missiles in Asia that the U.S. can’t counter because it’s bound by the treaty.

It’s a U.S.-Russia treaty that’s been a centerpiece of superpower arms control since the Cold War. And its demise has some analysts worried about a new arms race.
An American withdrawal has been expected for months, and an announcement is expected later Friday. It would follow years of unresolved dispute over Russian compliance with the pact, known as the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces, or INF, treaty.
It was the first arms control measure to ban an entire class of weapons: ground-launched cruise missiles with a range between 500 kilometers (310 miles) and 5,000 kilometers (3,100 miles). Russia denies that it has been in violation.
