Gary Lineker joins MPs in bid to remain friends with Germany after Brexit

Ex-England striker Gary Lineker has written an open letter to Germany, appealing for the two countries to remain friends after Brexit.
The Match of the Day presenter has joined a cross-party group of parliamentarians in their bid to stay friends with Germany.
The letter was penned to German newspaper Die Welt, and acknowledged the “genuine sadness” felt by many at the UK’s impending departure from the EU but insisted the two countries remain “very much on the same side”.
It was written in response to an emotional open letter to the Times last month from a string of high-profile Germans – from senior politicians to former footballer Jens Lehmann – appealing to Britain to stay.
In it, they cited their love of the “legendary British black humour”, milky tea and going to the pub after work to drink ale, as well as the UK’s role in welcoming back Germany as a sovereign nation following the “horrors” of the Second World War.
In their reply, the British group – including Sir Winston Churchill’s grandson, Sir Nicholas Soames – responded in similar tone to what they said had been a “touching and funny reminder of all that we share”.
“Your words are a reminder that, for many Europeans, the EU is not about quotas, directives, rebates and control, but something more profound,” they wrote.
“It is a reminder that, for Germany, Europe was a salvation after the horrors of the 1930s and 1940s, that defeated and replaced nationalism as a defining cause. And a reminder that you feel genuine sadness at our departure from what you hoped was a shared mission.

The letter went on to state that the Brexit debate in the UK has shown the British as “divided and rancorous”.
“This threatens the British reputation for good sense and pragmatism, especially when the world is watching more closely than usual,” it said.
“Your letter has reminded us that, however we voted on Brexit, we must be clearer that we are not about to retreat from our global responsibilities. Brits are outward-looking and engaged with the world.”
It ended: “Whatever the mechanics and sub-clauses of our future relationship, the tone of the text is unchanged – we are still friends, and very much on the same side.”
The signatories to the letter include former Conservative Party chairwoman Baroness Warsi, Tory MPs Tom Tugendhat and Anne-Marie Trevelyan, Labour MP Emma Reynolds and Labour peer Lord Wood of Anfield.

Man fined £2,000 for ‘upskirting’ woman at Victoria Tube station

A man has been fined for ‘upskirting’ a woman at a London Underground station ( StockSnap/Pixabay )
A man who “upskirted” a woman at a London Underground station has been fined £2,000.
Hiroshi Yuasa, 38, was spotted crouching behind the victim at Victoria Tube station in April 2018, taking a photograph up her skirt with his mobile phone.
Police who investigated then found several photographs and videos of women, “ranging from pictures of the face as well as pictures up the skirts”, and he was charged with outraging public decency, court documents said.
Yuasa, whose address was given as a flat in Belgravia Court, Ebury Street, central London, was fined at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday and told to pay £400 compensation to his victim.
He was also told to pay a £170 victim surcharge and £400 prosecution costs, a court staff member said.
The charge said: “It was reported that you were observed crouched down behind a female passenger with your hand extended under her skirt taking a photograph with your mobile phone.”
Upskirting is set to become a criminal offence in the spring after new legislation passed its final legal hurdle in the House of Lords earlier this month.
The offence would carry up to a two year jail sentence.

Terror suspect from east London accused of joining al Qaida in Syria

The Metropolitan Police said the charges relate to offences allegedly carried out between 2013 and 2014( PA Archive/PA Images )
A terror suspect from east Londonhas appeared in court charged with travelling to Syria and joining al Qaida.
Mohammed Yamin, 25, was arrested on Wednesday and subsequently charged with three offences – engaging in conduct in preparation of terrorist acts, membership of a proscribed organisation, and possession of a gun for a purpose connected with terrorism.
The Metropolitan Police said the charges relate to offences allegedly carried out between April 25 2013 and June 1 2014.
The particulars of the alleged offences include engaging in conduct in preparation for giving effect to his intention, namely the purchase of equipment and clothing; obtaining information about the routes to Syria from the UK, the purchase of a one-way flight ticket to facilitate the journey to Syria and his subsequent travel to Syria.
Yamin appeared before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday morning following his arrest as part of a pre-planned operation.
He was remanded in custody ahead of his next court appearance, at the Old Bailey,  on February 15, Scotland Yard said.
The Met said in a statement: “On January 30, officers from the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command arrested a 25-year-old man as part of a pre-planned operation.
“He was arrested at an address in east London and taken to a south London police station, where he was subsequently charged with the above offences.”

Sounders open two international slots

Kelvin Leerdam and Jordy Delem have received their green cards ahead of closed-door scrimmage against Atlanta United.

President of Soccer Garth Lagerwey will have some more flexibility to complete his roster as Kelvin Leerdam and Jordy Delemhave both acquired green cards and will no longer occupy international slots. The Seattle Sounders now have two open international slots and could open yet another one as Gustav Svensson was late to training camp while he worked towards his green card.
The club also announced that Tucker Bone left camp to return to the Air Force Academy. The cadet needs to complete his coursework and graduate before the Department of Defense will consider his entry into the World Class Athlete Program. Bone did remote studies during his week with the Sounders. Draftees Aleks Berkolds and Joel Rydstrand remain with the Sounders.
In other training camp news, Atlanta Unitedand the Sounders will conduct a closed door scrimmage on February 2 at Cal State-Fullterton.
Most of Tacoma Defiance’s contracted players who came through the Academy are with the club in SoCal, while the others were at the rebranding reveal. Their USL Championship-specific camp will open in a few weeks. Their rostered players will participate in various parts of MLS preseason.

International Travel Slowdown Hits U.S.

Trump’s policies and a strong dollar have led to stagnant international tourism growth in the U.S. Expect the slowdown to continue in 2019.

Although the U.S. industry has discussed a Trump Slump for the last few years, there has been scant evidence that travel to the U.S. has suffered heavily since 2016. Now it looks like the evidence is finally here.
New research from Tourism Economicsshows that international travel to the U.S. grew just 2 percent in 2018, with visitation from the Asia-Pacific region declining by 0.9 percent. While the Middle East and North America increased their visitation, the Middle East and Mexico have still not returned to 2016 levels. Visits from Canada are 9 percent lower than their peak in 2013.
When the United Nations World Tourism Organization reported its numbers on global tourism last month, it became obvious that the global tourism sector is experiencing a decline due to serious headwinds. The U.S., though, is positioned for a continued decline in the future.
The bigger picture shows the U.S. losing ground on the global stage. Arrivals to Europe and Asia-Pacific both increased by 6 percent, while the Middle East saw a 10 percent uptick in 2018. It seems that global travelers are looking elsewhere for their vacations.
“International travel markets posted disparate performance in 2018 including several notable surprises on the downside,” states the report from Tourism Economics. “After registering average annual growth of 23 percent over the previous decade, Chinese travel to the US stopped in its tracks last year—perhaps in connection to trade tensions. Similarly, South Korea fell 3 percent after averaging 11 percent growth over the prior ten years. Japan also contracted; this continues the narrative of an ever important but languishing market. And Germany surprised with a steep decline in 2018, perhaps evidence of a reaction to unpopular U.S. diplomacy and policies.”
The top growing markets for U.S. international travel turned out to be Spain (+11 percent), Italy (+11 percent), Brazil(+10 percent), and the Netherlands(+10 percent). Germany (-7 percent), Japan (-4 percent), South Korea(-3 percent), and Argentina (-2 percent). Visits from China were flat in 2018.
Inbound travel, overall, has slowed since March 2018, which was the beneficiary of an early Easter holiday.
Tourism Economics’ outlook for 2019 stops short of predicting a worldwide recession or economic meltdown. The group, however, suggests that a global slowdown in gross domestic product growth will occur, with China dropping from 6.6 percent growth in 2018 to 6 percent this year. That’s not good news for international travel in general.
With the U.S. dollar remaining expensive, at 10 percent higher than its long-term average, the outlook for inbound international travel remains tepid. With costs high, and declining economic performance abroad, it’s hard to see how the U.S. can boost visitation in the near term.

Ocean mixing that drives climate found in surprise spot

Challenges the long-held view that it was in the Labrador Sea

One of the key drivers of the world’s climate is an area in the North Atlantic Ocean, where warmer and colder water mix and swirl.
When scientists went for their first close look at this critical underwater dynamo, they found they were looking in the wrong place. By hundreds of miles.

Before the chaos

The consequences are not quite yet understood, but eventually it could change forecasts of one of the worst-case global warming scenarios still considered unlikely this century, in which the mixing stops and climate chaos ensues.
It’s called the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, and scientists describe it as a giant ocean conveyor belt that moves water from Greenland south to beyond the tip of Africa and into the Indian Ocean.
Warm, salty water near the surface moves north and mixes with cold, fresher water near Greenland. As that water cools and sinks it drives a slow circulation of the oceans that is critical to global climate, affecting the location of droughts and frequency of hurricanes. It also stores heat-trapping carbon dioxide deep in the ocean. The faster it moves, the more warm water gets sent into the depths to cool.
The area where warm water turns over in the North Atlantic is considered to be the engine of the conveyor belt. Scientists thought it was in the Labrador Sea west of Greenland.
But then a new international science team measured temperature, saltiness and the speed of ocean currents throughout the North Atlantic to try to better understand the conveyor belt. The preliminary results after hundreds of measurements in 21 months found that engine was several hundreds of miles east of where they figured, said lead author Susan Lozier, an ocean sciences professor at Duke University. The study, published in Science, puts it east of Greenland, closer to Scotland
The computer simulations that predict how the climate could change in coming years didn’t factor in exactly where the conveyor belt engine is, and now they may be able to.
Ms. Lozier and several outside experts said this doesn’t change their trust in the models, especially because when the models are checked with what is happening in the real world, they are found to be generally accurate.

Anil Ambani’s RCom files for insolvency as deal with Jio crumbles

Anil Ambani’s debt-laden telecom venture

Reliance Communications

 (

RCom

) decided to file for insolvency on Friday, saddled with a mounting debt of Rs 46,000 crore and unable to sell its spectrum assets to elder brother Mukesh’s Reliance

Jio

.

The insolvency filing comes weeks after Swedish network giant

Ericsson

petitioned the Supreme Court to arrest Anil over the recurring delays in payment of its dues worth Rs 550 crore, and accused the embattled businessman of engaging in “gross and wilful contempt” of the apex court. Also, it follows the failure of a spectrum trading deal between RCom and Jio.

With the filing of the insolvency proceedings in the Mumbai bench of the National company law tribunal (NCLT), the debt resolution will now have to be worked out in the prescribed period of 270 days.
“… the Board decided that the company will seek fast track resolution through NCLT, Mumbai. The Board believes this course of action will be in the best interests of all stakeholders, ensuring comprehensive debt resolution in a final, transparent and time bound manner within the prescribed 270 days,” RCom said in a statement.
The company’s board had met to review the progress of its debt resolution plans since the invocation of strategic debt restructuring on June 2, 2017. “The Board noted that, despite the passage of over 18 months, lenders have received zero proceeds from the proposed asset monetization plans, and the overall debt resolution process is yet to make any headway,” the statement further added.
RCom said that 100% approval of all 40 lenders had been “impossible to achieve” on any matter for over 12 months and despite 45 meetings. Other factors that prompted it to opt for insolvency was – as the company described it -“recurring legal challenges by Department of Telecom for spectrum monetization” and the continuing litigation by other parties.
“Resolution through NCLT is in the best interests of all stakeholders, ensuring finality, certainty and transparency through a time-bound 270-day court- approved process,” its statement said
While RCom had been unable to get its spectrum trading deal with Jio pass through DoT norms, Ericsson was also at its throat for non-payment of dues that the Swedish company had already marked down from Rs 1,600 crore to Rs 550 crore as part of a court-monitored settlement. But the company had still not been paid by September 30 last year, despite RCom’s commitment.
Ericsson had demanded the arrest of Anil in its most recent petition in the top court. “The respondents have abused the process of law to the hilt and caused grave damage to the interest of justice… having committed and guilty of contempt of court, be directed to be detained in civil prison unless… (they) purge themselves by making payment of Rs 550 crore along with interest,” the network company had petitioned.
RCom’s sale plan to Jio has also been in the doldrums after Mukesh’s telecom venture sought protection from any liability post the deal. Jio had petitioned the DoT to insulate it from any dues arising towards RCom for the period prior to the clearance of the deal.
DoT, however, had refused to play ball. “There is no question of giving any kind of immunity to the new buyer. It is public money, and we will take it from whoever owns it in case the corporate guarantee that RCom is providing us does not prove to be sufficient,” a senior official at the telecom department had said, a stand which has seen the collapse of the deal.

Ericsson and the DoT are now reviewing the future course of action after the insolvency filing by RCom.

Gangster Ravi Pujari held in Senegal: sources

Mumbai, Feb 1 Gangster Ravi Pujari, on the run for the last 15 years, has been arrested in Senegal in West Africa, a source in the security establishment said Friday.
Security agencies got clues about his whereabouts following the arrest of one of his close associates in Mumbai recently, the source added.
Pujari, who allegedly ran an extortion syndicate targeting mainly builders in Mumbai, was held from a hotel in Dakar, the capital of Senegal, on January 22, a senior official told on the condition of anonymity.
The Mumbai Police did not comment on whether the report was true.
The Indian Embassy got information about his arrest on January 25, the official said.
Pujari is facing dozens of cases of extortion and murder in various parts of India.
His trusted lieutenants, William Rodricks and Akash Shetty, were recently arrested by the Crime Branch of Mumbai Police in an extortion case.
The Indian authorities will now initiate the extradition process to bring Pujari back to the country, the official said.

As per the senior official, investigating agencies received information about Pujari’s whereabouts from Rodricks who used to be in touch with him over phone.
According to the police, Pujari, who hails from Karnataka, was initially associated with gangster Chhota Rajan, but he had also worked for fugitive underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.
Pujari reportedly parted ways with Rajan following an attack on the latter in Bangkok, said to be carried out by the Dawood gang, and formed his own gang.
Like Rajan, Pujari too tried to project himself as a ‘Hindu don’, and allegedly killed some of the accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case when they were out on bail.
He was known for threatening builders and celebrities for extortion. Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt had told Mumbai Police that Pujari threatened him, following which some members of his gang were arrested for conspiring to kill Bhatt.
Advocate Shahid Azmi, who was shot dead in 2010, had alleged that the Pujari gang had threatened him for representing terror accused. DC KRK AAR

Trump suggests he could declare emergency

President Donald Trump said talks with lawmakers on building his proposed Mexico border wall are pointless and suggested that he will declare a national emergency to get it done.
“I think Nancy Pelosi is hurting our country very badly by doing what she’s doing and, ultimately, I think I’ve set the table very nicely,” Mr. Trump said on Thursday in a wide ranging interview with The New York Times, referring to the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

‘Waste of time’

The talks are to conclude in two weeks and Mr. Trump has previously warned that if they do not end with money to build a wall on the border with Mexico, he will allow another government shutdown. In the interview, Mr. Trump made no mention of another closure, however, and suggested that he will declare a national emergency on the border as a way to use military funds. “I think she’s doing a tremendous disservice to the country. If she doesn’t approve a wall, the rest of it’s just a waste of money and time and energy because it’s desperately needed.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Mr. Trump dismissed the various investigations being waged against him. The President said his lawyers have been reassured by the departing Deputy-Attorney General Rod Rosenstein that he was not a target. “He told the attorneys that I’m not a subject, I’m not a target,” he said.

Rahul Gandhi Says Farmers Insulted, Promises "Surgical Strikes" On Centre

Congress chief Rahul Gandhi said the party would meet the Election Commission on Monday.

Congress chief Rahul Gandhi today said “surgical strikes” — one after the other — will be launched on the Narendra Modi government in the coming days by his party. Hinting at the issues on which the “surgical strikes” will be held, he said the biggest one facing the country was joblessness and the government has “failed completely” to address it.
The term “surgical strike” has been a running theme through the day, with NDA allies calling the budget a strike on the opposition.
Welcoming the interim budget this morning, BJP ally Ram Vilas Paswan said it was the “second surgical strike”.”The first one was on the border with bullets. This is the second one, as we are going into the 2019 polls with ballots. We will win with two-thirds majority,” the Bihar leader told NDTV.

Rahul Gandhi Says Farmers Insulted, Promises “Surgical Strikes” On Centre

All India  Edited by Anindita Sanyal

Congress chief Rahul Gandhi said the party would meet the Election Commission on Monday.
New Delhi:

A strong response came from senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor. “The so-called surgical strike in Pakistan did not prevent any of the bad things that have continued from there. If they (the NDA) call this a surgical strike, then we are anticipating failure in advance,” Mr Tharoor told NDTV.
At a press conference in the evening, Rahul Gandhi gave his take on the issue — that “there will be one surgical strike after another on the Modi government in the coming days”.
The Congress chief told the media that the Rs 6,000 yearly cash for farmers was a pittance. “You can waive Rs 3.5 lakh crore loan of 15 people, but give only Rs 17 per day to farmers. What else is this if not an insult?”
The Congress, Mr Gandhi said, would contest the elections on the issues concerning farmers, unemployment and attacks on institutions. “It will also be on the issue of Rafale,” he added.
The Congress said its detailed criticism of the budget will come tomorrow after it gets a chance to study the figures.
The party told reporters that it will meet the Election Commission on Monday with a document it has prepared on Electronic Voting Machines. “The main issue with EVM is that there is a doubt among many, many people about the fairness of EVMs. We want to create a backup to the system,” Mr Gandhi said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said the budget is a “trailer” for what is to come after the Lok Sabha elections.
